Sheltered and Supported Housing

Sheltered Housing

Sheltered Housing combines to enable vulnerable people to live independently, whilst providing the security of having someone on call in the case of emergencies (usually a scheme manager or warden who lives nearby). Residents in sheltered housing normally pay a monthly service charge. You should check what is included in the service charge as this can vary.

Supported Housing

Supported Housing is designed to provide housing and support to vulnerable people. This means that support can be provided to ensure people can continue to live in their own home or, alternativel, can move to some from of supported accommodation or residential care. (Mind have produced a leaflet which explains the different typs of accommodation available).

Supporting People Programme

This is a Government programme to provides housing related support for vulnerable people to help them live as independently as possible in the community. This can include living in their own homes, sheltered housing or other specialised supported housing. The programme was introduced in April 2003 to plan, fund and monitor the support provided by housing services.
